A striking original, unsigned landscape depicting a colorful rural village or hillside settlement, executed in an expressive mid-20th-century modernist style, approximately 1940s–1960s. The artist has created a highly animated landscape using an exceptionally vivid palette of orange, yellow, blue, turquoise, green, purple, magenta and pink. The houses, vegetation and surrounding hills are rendered with energetic strokes, while the dramatically swirling sky - heavily reminiscent of Vincent van Gogh - gives the composition a particularly distinctive character. The work displays characteristics associated with Expressionism, Fauvism and mid-century modernist landscape painting, including non-naturalistic color, simplified architectural forms, flattened perspective and vigorous, directional mark-making. The medium appears to be pastel or possibly oil pastel on paper. The surface has a relatively waxy/dense appearance, but the exact medium has not been scientifically determined and is therefore described conservatively. The reverse of the sheet is blank and does not have a visible artist's signature, gallery label, title, or provenance notation. The back shows considerable age-related soiling and pigment transfer consistent with the work having been stored or handled without a frame. The sheet has rounded corners and some edge wear.
