This is a stunning example of the iconic "Open Minds" Pedestal Bowl / Goblet Vase designed by the legendary Swedish glass artist Ulrica Hydman Vallien (1938–2018) for Kosta Boda. Ulrica Hydman Vallien originally launched the Open Minds series in 1986. It quickly became one of Kosta Boda's most recognizable and commercial signature lines. The line is famous for its dramatic, expressive, and almost theatrical hand-painted brushstrokes. The motif showcases a stylized, confident face characterized by bold black eyeliner, striking green eyes, and distinct red lips. Each piece is mouth-blown from premium crystal at the Kosta glassworks in Småland, Sweden, and subsequently hand-painted, meaning no two faces are absolutely identical. This particular model features a mottled, semi-opaque light blue/white wash on the bowl contrasting with a solid, vibrant blue stem and base.
Often cataloged as a "Bowl on Foot" (Model 98824) or a pedestal vase, this piece stands approximately 7.75 inches tall, 6.75” across at the rim, and 4.25” across at the foot. Pieces from the Open Minds collection are famous pop culture mainstays - most notably making frequent appearances as apartment decor on hit 1990s television shows like Friends and Sex and the City.
This example is in exceptional condition with a perfect “KOSTA BODA Since 1742” decal on the top of the foot, a crisp artist signature incorporated into the design, a clear diamond-engraved hand-signature in the center of the foot, and no obvious defects or blemishes.
